Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screenings allow us to detect any signs of mouth cancer as early as possible. It is a preventative measure, but it can also be diagnostic if signs of cancer are found. Especially if you have a family history of oral cancer, we recommend getting a screening at least once a year.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Signs or symptoms of oral cancer may include:

  • Lump in the cheek
  • White or red patch in the gums, tongue, or mouth lining
  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing
  • Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue (or numbness)
  • Teeth become loose or change in alignment
  • Consistent bad breath
  • Recurrent sores

Risk Factors of Oral Cancer

Catching precancerous lesions in their early stages makes it more likely for oral cancer to be cured once they are removed. Factors that can increase the risk of oral cancer include:

  • Tobacco use, such as cigarettes, chewing tobacco, cigars, snuff as well as any other form of tobacco use
  • Heavy alcohol intake
  • History of oral cancer
  • Excessive sun exposure

Screening Procedure

For an oral cancer screening, the dentist will examine the lips (inside and outside), all sides of the tongue, inside the cheeks, the hard palate (roof of your mouth), and the back of the throat. This accounts for any signs of oral cavity, pharyngeal, or laryngeal cancers.
